The State Flag of the Republic of Kazakhstan is one of the main state symbols of the Republic of Kazakhstan. It was determined by the Decree of the President RK «On State symbols of the Republic of Kazakhstan» (as of 24.01.1996), which has the force of the constitutional law. The State Flag represents a rectangular cloth of a sky blue color with a depiction of the sun with rays in the center, under which – a hovering eagle (golden eagle). Beside a flagpole there is a vertical line with a national ornament. The depiction of the sun, its rays, eagle and national ornament is of the gold color.

The width of the Flag is equal to half of its length. Its author is the artist Shaken Niyazbekov. A moderately blue self-color of the Flag reminds of a clean cloudless cupola of the sky high above us and is called to reflect adherence of Kazakhstan people to a high and noble idea of unity. The blue cloudless sky was always of all peoples the embodiment of peace, quietness and well-being. On the language of the heraldry (the science, which studies emblems) - the blue color and its tones correspond to such human qualities as honesty, faithfulness and hope. On the ancient Turkic language the «blue color» means the «sky».

The blue color for Turkic peoples is considered a sacred notion. The history of a cultural semantics of the blue color both of Turkic and other peoples of the world allows saying us: a blue background on the flag of a state is called to underline purity and eminence of intentions of Kazakhstan people in their appetence to a new statehood. The golden sun, which bathes in its rays, embodies quietness and wealth. The sun is the symbol of Movement, development process, symbol of growth and fading. The sun is the symbol of Time. The eagle, which spreads wings, - all-embracing, receiving into itself origin – again is the symbol of power and Great power statehood. The eagle, which peacefully hovers above native spaces, symbolizes great heartedness of a steppe people, who is ready to open its embraces to all friendly peoples and nations.
